From Per Simonsen (mom's nephew in Copenhagen, Denmark):
The childhood in the thirties were not easy. One thing was the food. There were rations for different kind of foods.
And if you were out of work, you would have to try to catch fish to have something to eat. Our grandfather and his two sons were fishing to be able to survive.
When the war started the 9th of April 1940, life became different. In Korsør, which was a small town with around 5000 residents, you had to be careful and not say anything to avoid getting into problems with the German troops. Both our grandfather and his sons were in the underground army. I can see on pictures from the war that a lot of people in Korsør had joined the army. Birthe was distributing different newspapers from the Danish underground army. If she had been caught, that would have meant torture and prison camp in Germany. I guess after five years of war, she would like to get out and experience a different life. Our grandfather had two brothers living in Canada, so that was a possibility.

Our thoughts are with you Uncle Ron, Harold, Heather, Steve, John, Chris and families at this difficult time due to the unexpected loss of your wife/mom/grandmother, known to us as Aunt Bert. My earliest memories go back to the Christmases your mother hosted at your place in St. Marys and the games we played in the study and the sleepovers we had in that amazingly big house of yours. There was always plenty of food; I remember being impressed by the largest variety of breakfast cereals I had ever seen. In 95, we stayed with your parents in Arnprior and once again, your mother's hospitality was amazing. Craig quickly realized he wasn't going to have to worry about being hungry or thirsty when at Aunt Bert's. The last time we visited was five years ago. Aunt Bert reminded us she was from Korsor and proud of her Danish heritage. She showed us the sweaters my mom had made for her, and her latest knitting projects. She gave my cousin, Meggen, whose 50th birthday we were celebrating, one of the scarves she knitted as a birthday present. On the way out, we walked by her infamous huge freezer, and she would not let us leave without many goodies from it and food for our journey home. Her generosity and kindness will always be remembered. Her niece, Chris, forever Christine to Aunt Bert, Doug, Craig, and Emily

To the entire Lang family, My family and I send our deepest condolences. I remember Mrs. Lang as a soft-spoken, most caring, positive person who had an aura of kindness around her. Mrs. Lang welcomed me in her home and made me feel comfortable. Indeed, she was a great cook taking much care and love in her baking and cooking. I remember the first time I visited with Christoper when at the end of dinner she kept on taking out different types of baked goods, each better than the prior one. And, then we all watched Jeopardy followed by Three's Company.
When I last visited Christopher in Toronto, Mrs. Lang was on the phone speaking from her hospital bed. Even at that time, she took interest in knowing how was I doing and what was going on in my life. Her big heart indeed knew no boundaries.

Birthe was my mom’s best friend (Jean Mulvihill). They had so many laughs together! Birthe was so kind, generous and thoughtful. She was a treasured part of our family life. I’ve many fond memories of playing endless games of cards, her wonderful cooking, her beautiful knitting, her incredible collection of antiques & tapestries, her infectious laughter & that special twinkle in her eye. She loved her family & “The Chief” as we called Ron. She’ll be missed by many & will be remembered fondly. Condolences to the family.

I am so sorry to learn of Mrs. Lang's passing. I remember fondly how when Chris would have us over in high school, your Mom always had cookies, drinks, and possibly even more yummy food ready for us to enjoy. She always made us feel welcome as teens, and I greatly appreciated her warmth and kindness. How I envied you your lovely Mom, Chris! She was such a gem and had the best laugh. Then years later when I became a mum, she knitted such beautiful little baby layettes for my babies. They all wore them (there's nothing more snuggly than sweaters and bonnets or caps made by hand with love!) and I've got some safely tucked away if we're blessed with grandchildren some day. Our sincere condolences for your family's loss. Thinking of all of you and sending love from BC.
