Obituary of Margaret Hughes

January 3, 1932 – October 16, 2023

With hearts filled with sadness, joy and gratitude, we share the news that Margaret was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in the early hours of Monday, October 16, 2023. She graced this world for 91 remarkable years. Margaret was not only the beloved wife of Rev. Dr. Leo Hughes but also his steadfast partner in love and ministry for over 67 years. Their enduring bond will be honored on their forthcoming anniversary on October 27.

Margaret's nurturing spirit extended beyond her role as a devoted mother to Colin (Gaetane), Tom (Vicki), Murray (Cheryl), Kim (Peter), Robert (Lori), and Catherine (Randy). She found immense joy in her roles as Grandma, Granny, and Nana to Nadine, Vincent (Diana), Adam, Melissa (Jordan), Jared, Logan and Mason, Autumn, and Elizabeth. Her legacy continued through her great-grandchildren Scotlyn, Poppy and Walt.

In her lifetime, Margaret faced the profound loss of infant daughter Elaine, infant grandson Joshua, and cherished grandson Brodie. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Leonora Maitland, finding faith and strength in the foundation they provided. Her siblings predeceased her.

Scotland was her birthplace, where her journey began before a serendipitous meeting led her across the ocean to Montreal. Kirkhill, ON and Rosetown, SK were chapters of her life's story, dedicated to ministry alongside her beloved Leo. Eventually, their path led them to Arnprior, where Margaret embraced her role as a minister's wife with grace and purpose.

At St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Arnprior, Margaret was the heartbeat of the Women's Missionary Society and a steadfast presence in every corner of her church community. To many, she was the embodiment of God's grace and beauty.

Margaret's unwavering faith in Jesus Christ illuminated her path, a light that never dimmed. Her commitment to this faith was the cornerstone of her being, providing solace and strength throughout her journey.

Beyond her roles within the church and home, Margaret spent two decades at Canadian Tire in Arnprior, leaving an undeniable mark on her colleagues and community.

Friends are invited to gather to remember and celebrate Margaret's extraordinary life during visitation at the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior, on Friday evening, October 20, 2023, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A commemorative service will then take place at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Arnprior, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception in de Renzy Hall. Interment at Arnprior Malloch Road Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Margaret's memory to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Arnprior Food Bank, charities close to Margaret’s heart, would be a fitting tribute to her giving spirit.
